Paul Petau – digital (Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte Munich and University Library Heidelberg / Fritz Thyssen Foundation 2023–2026)
In a study never addressed before, the project focuses on the figure of the jurist Paul Petau (1568–1614), a counsellor of the Parlement of Paris, collector of books, antiquities and medieval coins. The catalogue of his museum, printed in 1610, represents a turning point in the history of antiquarian culture. The book is made of two parts, the Antiquariae Supellectilis Portiuncula (prints of small objects) and the Veterum Nummorum Gnōrisma (prints of Roman and early medieval coins). This work represents the first printed illustrated catalogue of a private collection of antiquities. The illustrations it contains and the artefacts depicted are recorded in the Antiquitatum Thesaurus database, while the detailed annotation of the publication in its various editions will be available on the Heidelberg University Library's DWork digitisation platform (project homepage).
